Transliteration

“Labaik allahuma labaik, Labaik la sharika laka labbayk, Innal Hamda wan nimata laka wal mulk, la sharika lak.”

The Talbiyah has a number of meanings, such as:

1. Labaik Allahumma Labaik  (Here I am, O Allah, here I am)” is one response after another, which is repeated to show that the response is lasting and ongoing.

2. “Labaik Allahumma labbayk (Here I am, O Allah, here I am)” means, I submit and submit again, i.e., ongoing submission.

3. It may mean staying in one place (labba bi’l-makaan) and clinging to it, which means, I am persisting in obeying You, thus emphasizing the meaning of continuous servitude to Allah.

4. One of the meanings of the Talbiyah is confirming the love of Allah. There is an Arabic phrase imra’ah labbah (a loving woman) which refers to a woman who loves her child. One only says “Labbayk (Here I am at your service)” to a person whom one loves and respects.

5. It implies sincerity, as in the phrase lubb al-shay’ which means the essence of a thing and lubb al-rajul which means a man’s mind and heart.

6. It implies drawing close, as in the word ilbaab, which means drawing close, so it emphasizes the meaning of seeking to draw closer and closer to Allah.

7. It is a symbol of the Tawheed of the religion of Ibrahim, which is the spirit and aim of Hajj, indeed the spirit and aim of all the acts of worship. Hence the Talbiyah is the key to this act of worship that the pilgrim is embarking on.

The Talbiyah also includes:

Praise of Allah, which is the dearest thing with which a person may draw close to Allah.  It implies recognition of the blessings of Allah, for He is the source of all blessings and the One Who bestows them. It includes acknowledging that all sovereignty belongs to Allah alone, and no one else has any true dominion. (Mukhtasar Tahdheeb al-Sunan, Ibn al-Qayyim, 2/335-339)

When the pilgrim is reciting the Talbiyah, he feels a connection with all other created beings, as they all join with him in submission to Allah alone and echo his Talbiyah. The Messenger ﷺ said: “There is no Muslim who recites the Talbiyah but whatever is to his right and to his left of stones, rocks and clods recites it with him, to the furthest point to the east and the west” – meaning from his right and his left.” (At-Tirmidhi, 828)

Inner Dimensions of Talbiyah

We can understand and deduce the inner dimension of Talbiyah through the Hadeeth in which the Prophet ﷺ said: “When any pilgrim utters Talbiyah, every stone and tree on his right and on his left responds with a (similar) Talbiyah, until the whole earth resounds with it.” [Ibn Khuzaymah]

Reflect on this call and the act of repeating Talbiyah loudly as well as its external and internal impact and how it is related to the call of the founder of this great rite, the intimate friend of Allah, Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham) عليه السلام when Allah The Almighty commanded him to call people and proclaim the message. Allah The Almighty promised him that He will convey his call to all people. Allah Says (what means):

{And proclaim to the people the Hajj [pilgrimage]; they will come to you on foot and on every lean camel; they will come from every distant pass.} [Qur’an, 22: 27]

It means: announce Hajj to mankind and call them to perform Hajj to this House which We have commanded you to build. It was said that Ibrahim عليه السلام said, “O Lord, how can I convey this to people when my voice will not reach them?’’ It was said, “Call them and We will convey it.” So, Ibrahim, you stood up (on his place, or on the Black Stone, or on (the mountain of) As-Safa or on (the mountain of) Abu Qubays and said, “O mankind! Your Lord has established a House so come for pilgrimage to it.’’ It is said that the mountains lowered themselves so that his voice would reach all the corners of the earth, and those who were still in their mothers’ wombs and their fathers’ loins would hear the call. The response came from everything that heard him, from stones, trees, and those whom Allah has decreed will make Hajj, until the Day of Resurrection: “We answer your call, O Allah, we answer your call.” [Ibn Katheer]

It is the slogan of declaring an identity. It also indicates that this rite is universal and brings happiness to all creatures, that all beings respond to it and that the Lord of all creatures and the whole universe blesses this rite.

It is the symbol of distinction which differentiates between the advocators of this great Divine rite and the advocators of other contrary earthly projects. It differentiates between this journey to which the whole existence responds and the human nature finds comfort in, and other projects which, if they do not clash, go against existence and are alien to the human nature.

First 10 days of Dhul Hijjah: Its Importance and Facts

Verily, Islam and Muslims have been blessed by Allah[swt] with many merits and special characteristics.

One of the special characteristics that Allah[swt] has blessed the Ummah with are the times of the year, during which, the obedience or acts are extremely beneficial.

Likewise, He has blessed us with special places where forgiveness and mercy may be sought and where righteous deeds may be performed.

At these times and at these places, Muslims strive to obtain the pleasure of Allah[swt] and (perhaps even) compete with others in doing things that bring them closer to the Rahmah of Allah[swt].

These seasons or times of the year are (in fact) gifts from Allah[swt]. And He [swt] has given it to the Ummah since they are generously rewarded for relatively small good deeds. These are times of the year with great opportunities.

One of the times of opportunities is the first ten days of Dhul Hijjah.

The virtues and importance of these ten days of Dhul Hijjah have been mentioned in the Noble Quran and in the authentic Sunnah.

Virtues and facts of the First Ten Days of Dhul Hijjah

Outlined below are the virtues and facts of the first 10 days of Dhyl Hijjah:

Allah swore by those days in the Holy Quran.

“By the down. And by ten nights (of Dhul Hijjah)” – (Al-Fajr: 1-2).

Ibn Katheer in his commentary on this verse:

“The intending meaning of the ten nights is the first 10 days of Dhul Hijjah as has been stated by Ibn ‘Abbas, Ibn Az-Zubair, Mujahid, as well as others from the Pious Predecessors and those who came after them”

Allah Completed Islam during one of these ten days.

“This day I have perfected for you, your religion and completed My favors upon you and have approved for you Islam as religion.” (Quran, Al-Maidah:3)

These 10 days fall at the end of the well-known months of Hajj

The first ten days of Dhul Hijjah fall at the end of the well-known months of Hajj.

Righteousness in these days comes with great rewards

Righteous deeds performed during the first ten days of Dhul-Hijjah are, as we have already discussed, more beloved to Allah[swt] than those deeds performed during other regular days.

The first 10 days of Dhyl Hijjah are generally considered the best days of the year.

The first ten days of Dhul Hijjah are considered the best days of the year because the Prophet[saw] said:

“The best days in this worldly life are the first ten days of Dhul-Hijjah.”

Pilgrimage to Mecca is performed during these 10 days of Dhul Hijjah.

Another virtue (importance) of the first ten days of Dhul Hijjah is that the pilgrimage to Mecca is performed during them (which is one of the pillars of Islam).

Arafat also falls on one of these days

The first 10 days of Dhul Hijjah also contains the blessed day of Arafat. This day is a great day during which Allah[swt] frees many of His worshippers from the fire of Hell.

Yawm-un-Nahr also falls on one of these blessed days

Another virtue of the first ten days of Dhul Hijjah is that Yawm-un-Nahr falls on one of them.

Yawm-un-Nahr is also called “The greatest day of Hajj” (i.e. because several important rights of Hajj must be performed on that day such as slaughtering the sacrificial animal, shaving the head (for men) or shortening the hair (for women), stoning all their jamarat, and the Tawaf of Hajj)

This is such that every Muslim can worship Allah[swt] upon knowledge. It will prevent falling into bid’ah (newly invented matters in religion) which are now associated with certain seasons and times of the year.

Remembrance of Allah and performing righteous deeds

Seek to get closer to Allah[swt] by remembering Him, obeying Him, worshiping Him, and reading the Quran.

Also by serving Him and helping His religion (Islam) by defending the Quran and the Sunnah of His Prophet[saw], and helping Muslims as much as you can.

Thanking Allah Almighty during these days

We should also welcome this blessed days by thanking Allah[swt] for providing us with such an opportunity to obtain the generous rewards for the righteous deeds performed during this season or time of the year.

And for allowing us to live to see another season during which we may obtain a great mass of rewards, especially in light of the fact that many people were denied this opportunity either by death or illness or thru negligence.

Preferable deeds in the first 10 days of Dhul Hijjah

It is preferable to increase all types of good deeds during these blessed days of the month, because of the superiority of performing righteous actions.

However, there are some preferable deeds to perform during these days, or on some of them. They are as follows:

Increase the rememberance of Allah (SWT)

In surah Al-hajj, Allah[swt] encourages the believing once to remember Him during the first 10 days of Dhul Hijjah as stated below:

… and mention the name of Allah[swt] on known (specific) days…”

Frequently saying ‘Al-hamdu Lillah’, ‘La ilaaha illAllah’, ‘Allahu Akbar’

It is Sunnah to say the Takbeer during the first ten days of Dhul Hijjah and to say it loudly in the mosque, the home, the street and every place where it is permitted to remember Allah[swt] and mention His name out loud, as an act of worship and as a proclamation of the greatness of Allah[swt].

Fasting during the first 10 days.

It has been authentically narrated that the Prophet[saw] used to fast the first nine days of Dhul-Hijjah. Hunaydah Ibn Khalid narrated upon the authority of his wife who said:

“Some of the wives of the Prophet[saw] told me that the Prophet[saw] used to fast the Day of Aashoorah, the first nine days of Dhul Hijjah, and three days out of every month”

Standing the Nights in Prayer.

This is one of the righteous deeds that is preferable to perform during these 10 days of Dhul Hijjah.

However, it is important not to specifically choose the night of Eid for night prayers while not doing so for the other nights of the first ten days of the month.

Fasting the Day of Arafat.

If you can fast all the first nine days of the month, then you automatically will fast on this day. But if you can’t fast all the days, then it is preferred to include the day of Arafat in your fasting days among the 10. The Prophet[saw] said:

… fasting the day of Arafat is an expiation for (all of the sins of the previous year, and an expiation for all the sins of the coming year.”

So, my beloved brothers and sisters, if it difficult for you to fast all the nine days of the first 10, then at least do not deny yourself the great and generous reward for fasting the Day of Arafat!

Attending the Eid Prayer

The Prophet[saw] always attended the Eid prayers and never left them off. Likewise, he [saw] commanded all the people to attend the Eid prayers, even elderly women, widows still in their period of seclusion after the death of their husbands, and even menstruation women, although he [saw] ordered them not to pray and to stay away from the place of prayer.

All of which is evidence that attending the Eid prayer is either a stressed Sunnah or an obligatory act of worship.

Slaughtering and distributing the meat of a Sacrificial Animal

Sacrificing an animal on the day of Eid-ul-Adha which is the last of these ten days is a Sunnah of Prophet Ibraheem (peace and blessings of Allah[swt] be upon him) and a Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad [saw]. Every Muslim whom Allah[swt] has given the ability should fulfill this duty as Allah[swt] says:

Therefore turn in prayer to your Lord and sacrifice.” (Al-Kawthar 108:2)

It is reported that:

the Prophet[saw] never missed slaughtering a sacrificial animal. He always slaughtered two rams, always sacrificing them after the Eid prayer, and he said: “Whoever slaughters before the Eid prayer then it is not a sacrifice, it is simply considered meat that he has given to his family.

And Abu Hurayrah (may Allah[swt] be pleased with him) reported that Allah[swt]’s Messenger[saw] said,

“Whoever can afford to offer a sacrifice but does not do so, let him not approach our place or prayer.” (Reported by Ahmad and Ibn Majah).

It is necessary for the one who intends to offer the sacrifice that he/she does not remove any hair, nail or skin from the sunset on last day of Dhul- Qa’dah until the sacrifice is done on the Eid day.

This hadith is reported by all the famous Muha-dit Heen apart from al-Bukhari.

Performing Hajj and Umrah

It is preferable for anyone who has already performed the obligatory Hajj and Umrah to again perform as often as it is easy for him to do so, because of what has been mentioned (in the authentic Sunnah) about the reward for frequently performing Hajj and Umrah. Ibn Mas’ood [ra] said that the Messenger of Allah [saw] said:

“Make the Hajj and the Umrah follow each other closely for they remove poverty and sins just as a blacksmith’s furnace remove impurities from iron, gold, and silver. And there is no reward for a Hajj which is accepted except Jannah.”

So, part of the greatest deeds that you can spend your time doing during the first ten days of Dhul Hijjah, is to join the ranks of those performing Hajj and Umrah.

Contained in the last 10 days of Dhul Hijja are lots of acts of worship, remembrance, submissiveness, and so many open displays of our complete dependence upon Allah[swt].

May Allah[swt] enable us to make the best of these blessed days and nights and make it a means of our success in this world and the next!

Day of Arafah: It’s meaning, virtues and why you should fast

NOTE: Day of Arafat 2017 will begin in the evening of Wednesday, 30 August and ends in the evening of Thursday, 31 August. Dates may vary.

Insha Allah, you are just to learn about one of the most important days on the Islamic calendar. This day is such a very mighty day and it is worth your time.

Those performing the rites of Hajj spend this day in prayer and worship on this mountain called Mount Arafah in Makkah. However, those of us who have not been blessed with the opportunity to be on the plains have still got lots of Barakah to strive for. But first of all, let’s know what it is.

What is the Meaning of Day of Arafah?

The term Arafah is the name of a mountain located in Makkah which is 70 meters high and is also known as the Mount of Mercy. Day of Arafah is a day that falls on the 9th day of Dhul Hijjah. It is called the Day of Arafah because, on this day, pilgrims go to this mountain from Mina, for the most important rite of hajj.

On this day on the mountain, the Khutbah of Hajj is narrated and Zuhr and Asr prayers are combined. The whole day is spent by the pilgrims on the mountain to supplicate to Allah to forgive their sins and to pray for personal strength in the future.

What are the virtues of the Day of Arafah?

A day can’t just be praised and celebrated for no reason. What is it about this day that makes it special?

  • It is on this day Islam was perfected

“… This day, I have perfected your religion for you, completed My favor upon you, and have chosen for you Islam as your religion.” (Quran 5:3)

A day like this is really worth it. Imagine Allah completing Islam on such a day, no doubt that His favors will be a win-win for every Muslim who takes this serious.

Reported by Umar Ibn al-Khattab [rahimahu], once a Jewish man said to him, “O Ameer al-Mu’mineen, there is an Aayah in your Book which you recite; if it had come to us Jews, we would have taken that day as a festival.” Umar said, “Which Aayah?” He said: “This day I have perfected your religion for you, completed My favor upon you, and have chosen for you Islam as your religion.” Umar said, “We know on which day and in which place that was revealed to the Prophet [saw]. It was when he was standing in ‘Arafaah on a Friday.”

  • It is a day of Eid for every Muslim.

The Prophet[saw] said: “The day of ‘Arafah (Yawm ‘Arafah ), the Day of Sacrifice (Yawm al-Nahr ) and Ayyaam al-Tashreeq (the 3 days following Yawm al-Nahr) are Eid (festival) for us, the people of Islam. These are days of eating and drinking.”

  • It is a day by which Allah swore an oath. 

The Almighty cannot swear by anything except that which is mighty. Yawm ‘Arafaah (the day of Arafah) is the “witnessed day” mentioned in the Quran:

“By the witnessing day [Friday] and by the witnessed day [the Day of ‘Arafaah].” (Quran 85:3).

It was reported from Abu Hurayrah [rahimahu] that the Prophet[saw] said: “The promised day is the Day of Resurrection, the witnessed day is the Day of ‘Arafah, and the witnessing day is Friday.” – Al-Tirmidhi

  • Fasting on this day is an expiation for two years. 

“Fasting on the Day of ‘Arafah absolves the sins for two years: the previous year and the coming year…” – Reported by all except Al-Bukhari and At-Tirmidhi

  1. It is the day of forgiveness of sins and freedom from the Fire

It was narrated that the Prophet [saw] said: “There is no day on which Allah frees more people from the Fire than the Day of ‘Arafah. He comes close and expresses His pride to the angels, saying, ‘What do these people want?’”

Why should you fast on the day of Arafah?

This is very simple. You should fast on this day if you want to achieve the mercy of Allah mention above. As I mentioned earlier, this day is an opportunity for every Muslim. We all are sinners who want to be forgiven, let’s secure this beautiful day to clean ourselves.

Believers should note that this (fasting) is mustahab for those who are not on Hajj. In the case of the one who is on Hajj, it is not Sunnah for him to fast on the Day of ‘Arafah because the Prophet [saw] did not fast on this day in ‘Arafah. It was narrated that he forbade fasting on the Day of ‘Arafah in ‘Arafah.
