Quran Verses and Hadiths About Dating in Islam

In the Name of Allâh, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful

The following verses of the Holy Quran shows clear proves that discourage dating in Islam. Let’s take our time to scan through this text to see what we can understand.

  1. Surah Mai’dah, chapter 5 verse 5 (5:5)

  • Made lawful to you this day are At-Tayyibat.

  • The food of the People of the Scripture is lawful to you, and your food is lawful to them.

  • (Lawful to you in marriage) are chaste women from the believers and chaste women from those who were given the Scripture before your time when you have given them their due, desiring chastity, not illegal sexual intercourse, nor taking them as girlfriends (or lovers).

  • And whosoever rejects faith, then fruitless is his work; and in the Hereafter he will be among the losers.

In the previous verse after Allah has mentioned the filthy things that He prohibited for His believing servants and the good things that He allowed for them, He said next,

  1. “Made lawful to you this day are At-Tayyibat”

  2. “The food of the People of the Scripture is lawful to you…”,

This is the first and second part of the verse which we actually need not to address because it speaks about what is halal and what is haram in slaughtering of animals, and also whose food is halal for Muslims to eat.

Our emphasis lies on the remaining part of the verse which rely emphasis on our topic;

  • “(Lawful to you in marriage) are chaste women from the believers…”

This is the third part of the verse according to my grouping. The Ayah states: you are allowed to marry free, chaste believing women.

This Ayah is talking about women who do not commit fornication, as evident by the word “chaste”. And how do you ensure that you remain chaste? It’s by abstaining from all that will draw you closer to fornication and this includes dating.

The verse continues by saying: “Desiring chastity, not illegal sexual intercourse, nor taking them as girl-friends (or lovers)”.

And just as women must be chaste and avoid illegal sexual activity, such is the case with men, who must also be chaste and honorable.

Therefore, Allah said, (…not illegal sexual intercourse) as adulterous people do, those who do not avoid sin, nor reject adultery with whomever offers it to them.

“(nor taking them as girl-friends (or lovers)”, this part of the verse is self-explanatory. It is pointing directly to those who have mistresses and girlfriends who commit illegal sexual intercourse with them.

This verse in particular has done massively great in enlightening us about dating and didn’t end there but warned us by saying that “Whoever rejects faith, then fruitless is his work and in the Hereafter he will be among the losers.”

  1. Surah Isra – chapter 17 verse 32 (17:32)

And come not near to unlawful sex. Verily, it is Fahishah (immoral sin) and an evil way.

This verse of the Quran is particularly popular where the command from Allah states that the righteous should never come near Zina (Unlawful Sex) and everything that leads to it.

Allah says, forbidding His servants to commit Zina or to approach it or to do anything that may lead to it:

And come not near to unlawful sex. Verily, it is a Fahishah (immoral sin), meaning a major sin, and an evil way, meaning, a terrible way to behave.

Dating can only leads you nowhere than Zina (unlawful sex) which is already warned by Allah himself.

Imam Ahmad recorded Abu Umamah saying that a young man came to the Prophet and said,

“O Messenger of Allah! Give me permission to commit Zina (unlawful sex).”

The people surrounded him and rebuked him, saying, “Stop! Stop!”

But the Prophet said, 0 (Come close).

The young man came to him, and he said, (Sit down), so he sat down.

The Prophet said, (Would you like it (unlawful sex) for your mother)!

He said, “No, by Allah, may I be ransomed for you.”

The Prophet said, Neither do the people like it for their mothers.

The Prophet said, (Would you like it for your daughter)?

He said, “No, by Allah, may I be ransomed for you.”

The Prophet said, Neither do the people like it for their daughters.

The Prophet said, (Would you like it for your sister)?

He said, “No, by Allah, may I be ransomed for you.”

The Prophet said, Neither do the people like it for their sisters.

The Prophet said, (Would you like it for your paternal aunt)?

He said, “No, by Allah, O Allah’s Messenger! May I be ransomed for you.”

The Prophet said, Neither do the people like it for their paternal aunts.

The Prophet said, (Would you like it for your maternal aunt)?

He said, “No, by Allah, O Allah’s Messenger! May I be ransomed for you.”

The Prophet said, Neither do the people like it for their maternal aunts.

Then the Prophet put his hand on him and said, O Allah, forgive his sin, purify his heart and guard his chastity.

After that the young man never paid attention to anything of that nature.

Let’s ask ourselves these questions before paying attention to things of this nature. Let’s not get deceived by Satan to things which we will soon regret.

As a matter of fact, dating is the main cause of most unlawful sex among adults. How can you be so sure that you can avoid it when Satan is very active.

The best solution is to do it the Islamic way. Don’t think of it when you are not ready yet. Until you know that yeah, now I am ready to have a wife then you can think about it.

The misguided fellows will always deny the truth without any valid prove, they will rather claim that some of these practices like birthdays, valentine, dating and the likes no longer have any religious significance (despite the fact that it is authentically stated in the Holy Quran).

We are not misguided, and we will not allow Satan to misguide us. Let’s abstain from the unlawful and paradise shall be our dueling place. Hope that we all meet in Heaven.

I will update this post as soon as I obtain more information on additional verses and hadiths that can help us. Thank you and Asalaamu-Alleikum to you all.
